Managing files in a release package

By the end you’ll know that a release package can hold any file you choose, not only the master and the cover, and you’ll have added, removed and re-marked files in one.

Two lists: what goes out with the release, and everything else in the track.

Before you start

  • A track with files already uploaded. Any file type can go in the package: masters, stems, artwork, lyrics, PDFs, press photos.
  • Permission to edit the track’s release. If you can’t see the options below, ask the track’s owner.

  1. 1

See what is in the package

Open the track and choose the Files tab. The Release package list holds the files that go out with the release. Every other file in the track sits under Other files. A line under the list shows how many files are in the package and whether it is Published.

    • You now see the package list, with each file’s role under its name.
  2. 2

Add any file to the package

Press the … beside Other files and choose Add to release. Tick every file you want in the package, such as stems, lyrics sheets, PDFs or press photos, then press Update selection. You can also open a single file’s … menu and choose Add to release.

    • You now see the files you ticked listed in the package, and a “Release files updated” message.
    • On the web you can also drag a file from Other files up into Release package.
  3. 3

Mark the main audio and the cover

In the same Add to release list, press Mark beside one audio file to make it the Main audio, and beside one image to make it the Cover. Only one file can hold each role. Marking another takes the role from the first, which stays in the package as an ordinary file.

    • You now see one file tagged Main and one tagged Cover.
    • The Mark button only shows on audio and image files. Another way: open a file’s … menu and choose Set as main audio or Set as main cover image.
  4. 4

Take a file out of the package

Open the file’s … menu and choose Remove from release. The file stays in the track under Other files. Nothing is deleted. You can also untick it in the Add to release list and press Update selection.

    • You now see the file gone from the package list and back under Other files.
  5. 5

    Rename or tag a file

To change how a file reads in the package, open its … menu and choose Rename. To note that it is a rough, approved or instrumental take, open the file and press Add tag. Both changes show everywhere the file appears.

    • You now see the new name or tag on the file in the package.
  6. 6

    Check what your recipient gets

Open the Send tab and press Preview and edit. The package shows its metadata, credits and files, and the Files heading has an Edit button for the same selection list. On the published page, files appear under File assets, after the main audio and the cover.

    • You now see the release as a recipient sees it, with your chosen files listed.

What a package accepts

Which files
Any file in the track. The package is not limited to audio and artwork, so stems, lyrics, PDFs and press photos can all go in.
Main audio
One audio file. It is the one that plays on the release page.
Cover art
One image file. It is the cover on the release page.
Release file
The label on every other file in the package. We found no limit on how many you add.
Order
The app lists package files by name. Number your file names, such as 01_Drums, if the order matters to the reader.

Ways people use this

Handing a label everything they need

Add the master, the stems, the lyrics PDF and the press photos, then mark the master and the final artwork as Main and Cover. Your label opens one link and finds all of it, instead of asking you for each file.

Keeping a rough mix out of the release

Leave it in Other files. It stays in the track for comments and listening, but it never appears on the release page.

Tips

  • The first image you upload becomes the cover by default. If it is the wrong one, mark another image as Cover.
