Vandall App
Share a file with a link
By the end anyone you send the link to can play your file, and do only what you’ve allowed: comment, download, or neither.
Before you start
- A file uploaded to a track. You share one file at a time.
- 1
Make the link
Open the file from the Files tab and press Share, under the waveform to the left of Download. The Share file link panel opens with your link already made. Press Copy to put it on your clipboard.
- You now see a working link, ready to send.
- 2
Decide what they can do with it
Use the switches above the link to choose what the recipient can do. Turn on Comments to let them write back. Turn on Downloading to let them keep a copy; with it off, their page has no download button. Turn on Cover art to show the artwork with the audio.
- You now see a link that does only what you left switched on.
- Turning off Downloading removes the download button. Anyone listening can still record what plays.
- 3
Put a password on it, if it needs one
Switch on Password and type one into Set a password…. It saves as you type, and closing the panel keeps what you typed last. If you switch it on but leave the field empty, the app warns you, because an empty password protects nothing.
- You now see a link that asks for the password before it plays.
- Send the password separately from the link, for example by text message, so one forwarded email does not carry both.
- 4
Check what the recipient gets
Open the link in a browser where you’re signed out. You’ll see what they see: the file in a player they can press play on, with no account, sign-up or login needed. That’s the point of the link: the person receiving it doesn’t have to join anything.
- You now see the page they see, with nothing between them and the music.
- 5
Take it back when you need to
Press Stop sharing at the top right of the share panel to switch the link off for good. The app asks you to confirm first. After that, anyone opening the old link gets a not-found page. If you share the file again, you get a new link. The old one stays dead.
- You now see the old link switched off. Sharing again gives you a fresh one.
What each control on the share panel does
- Comments
- Adds a comment box to the page. With it off, they can listen but not write, and they can’t see existing comments.
- Downloading
- Adds a download button to the page. With it off, there’s no button. The audio still streams, so this discourages copying rather than preventing it.
- Password
- Asks for a password before anything plays. Once someone enters it, their browser stays unlocked if they reload, so they aren’t asked again.
- Cover art
- Shows the release artwork on the page. Turn it off while your artwork is still a placeholder.
- The link itself
- Never expires. There’s no expiry date to set. It works until you press Stop sharing.
- Stop sharing
- Switches the link off permanently. There’s no pause and no way to bring the same link back. Sharing again creates a new one.
Ways people use this
A mix going to someone outside the project
Turn Comments on and Downloading off. They can tell you what they think without a WAV of an unreleased track sitting in their downloads folder. If they need the file later, turn Downloading back on. The link stays the same.
Something that must not travel further
Add a password and send it separately from the link. The page shows nothing until the password is entered. The link never expires, so press Stop sharing on the day it should no longer be available.
You sent the wrong version
Press Stop sharing, then share the right file. The old link stops working. Send the new link with a note saying the first one is out of date, because people rarely re-open a link they’ve already used.
Tips
- Vandall doesn’t tell you who opened a link or how long they listened. If you need to know they heard it, ask them to leave a comment.
